Student grants and benefits

Kela Study Grants

If you are not a Finnish citizen and have come to Finland to study, you will not usually be eligible for student financial aid from Finland.

Read more about student financial aid on the Kela website.

VR Student Discount

You can get a student discount on long-distance and VR commuter train tickets if you have a student card or student ID that entitles you to the discount.

Read more on the VR website.

Kela Meal Subsidy

If you are a student at a higher education institution, you can get a discount on the price of a student meal in restaurants that are covered by the Kela meal scheme.

You can get the meal allowance at a student restaurant:

  • by showing your digital Frank, Kide.app, Pivo, Slice student card or Tuudo student ID
  • by showing a valid student card from your university of applied sciences.
  • showing a valid student card or ISIC student card with the name of a Finnish university or university of applied sciences, or
  • by showing a Kela meal allowance card.

The meal allowance is EUR 2,55 per meal. The student restaurant deducts the subsidy from the price of the meal, so you pay less for your meal than the subsidy. You can only get a meal allowance for one meal a day. For example, in Kajaani, the price of a subsidized student lunch at Restaurant foX is EUR 2.99. Restaurant foX is open Mon-Fri from 10.45-12.45 and you can find the foX menu here.

You can find all subsidized restaurants in the Kela student restaurant search.

Read more about Kela meal subisidy.

Student Union KAMO

When you join the KAMO student union, you will receive a student card for the University of Applied Sciences, which entitles you to a wide range of student benefits and discounts. These benefits are available to you both locally and nationally.

KAMO members can have both a physical and a digital student card.

By becoming a KAMO member, you will support KAMO activities such as tutoring, student advocacy, student welfare and KAMO Activities events!

Read more and become a member!

Study certificate

You can prove your studies with an official study certificate after you have accepted a place in My Studyinfo and enrolled as an attending student.

FSHS Services and Healthcare Fee for Students

FSHS Services and Healthcare Fee for Students

If you are studying for a university degree and are registered as a student, you are entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS, and in Finnish YTHS).

Students at universities of applied sciences must pay a health care fee to Kela. You will not be sent an invoice for the fee, but you must remember to pay the fee in OmaKela e-service each semester. Once you have paid the health care fee to Kela, the FSHS services are free of charge.

NOTE! You must always pay the university student health fee if you are eligible for FSHS services. You cannot be exempted from the fee if, for example, you use occupational health services instead of FSHS services, or if you do not receive student financial aid.

The amount of the health care fee for university students is reviewed annually, and you can pay both the spring and autumn semesters in the spring, and only the autumn semester in the autumn. The fee for the autumn semester 2024 is €36.80. Check the payment due dates in OmaKela e-service.

You do not have to pay the healthcare fee if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, Switzerland, Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
