Open University Studies

Open University of Applied Sciences (Open UAS) studies are open for everyone regardless of your previous studies, work experience and age. However, to succeed in the studies you should have sufficient study, language and time management skills. The Open UAS studies are independent courses, offered online, giving you the opportunity to study part-time and remotely. The studies do not lead to a degree, but give you a head start for a degree studies. 

Studies in an Open University of Applied Sciences give you the opportunity to search for the right study path. The offered courses are based on KAMK degrees' curricula and can be accredited towards a degree later on.

The price for open university of applied sciences courses is 15 € per credit. Most courses are worth 3 to 5 ECTS (credits). Please note that 1 credit means approximately 27 hours' work load for the student.

 There is no separate enrollment period for independent online courses but please note the enrollment is binding.

Pathway Studies

KAMK offers a wide selection of English-taught degrees that provide valuable core knowledge, hands-on experience and networking opportunities in your future industry.  

Students can complete studies through KAMK Pathway program. Pathway studies are taught in English and require physical attendance in Kajaani. The studies will start in autumn 2024 and the application period is 31 July - 7 August 2024. The admission decision to pathway studies is done based on interview. The extent of Bachelor's pathway studies is approximately 60 credits, which corresponds to one academic year of study. Pathway studies for academic year 2024-2025 cost 250 euros. KAMK offers pathway studies for free for people who have fled the war from Ukraine for humanitarian reasons. 
Note: pathway students are not entitled to student financial aid such as study grants from KELA.

The offered courses are based on KAMK degrees’ curricula and can be accredited towards a degree later. Studies are taught face-to-face and as full-time studies. Pathway studies help you to prepare for higher education studies and reach the skill level needed for admission. Upon successful completion of the pathway studies, international students can apply to enter for degree studies at KAMK.

The offered Pathway Studies will be published later in April 2024. 

 

How to apply for Pathway Studies

Application period for Pathway studies starting in autumn 2024 takes place on 31 July - 7 August 2024. Application period for Pathway studies starting in spring 2025 takes place in November-December 2024. The application form opens on Wednesday 31 July 2024. 

Please note:

  • applications will be handled after the application period has started, not any sooner! 
  • for applicants there will be an interview or an alternative entrance exam. The interview will determine the motivation and readiness to study as well as the prerequisites for completing the studies.
  • if there are more eligible applicants than places available, pathway students may be selected by drawing lots from among the eligible applicants after the application deadline.
  • applicants whose language of education is not Finnish, are required to submit a certificate of language proficiency when applying for Finnish-language pathway studies.

  • KAMK reserves the right to decide on the selection of students and to select the most qualified applicants for the pathway on the basis of applications and interviews

APPLICATION ON THE BASIS OF OPEN UAS STUDIES

Separate application based on Open UAS studies
You can apply to become a degree student after completing the required number of credits at an open university of applied sciences.

Studies completed in any university of applied sciences are eligible, but they must be open UAS studies and part of the degree programme that you are applying for. Notice! Only open UAS studies completed in Finland are acceptable.

The required credit amount as follows:
  • 45 credits of Bachelor level studies
  • 15 credits of Master level studies (for the degree of 60 credits)
  • 20 credits of Master level studies (for the degree of 90 credits)

When applying for a Master’s Degree programme:

  • You must in addition to open UAS studies meet the general eligibility requirement for the studies (suitable higher education degree and a minimum of 2 years’ (24 months) of work experience after completing the degree).
  • At least part of the open UAS studies must be completed at the Kajaani University of Applied Sciences.


If the number of applications exceeds the available amount of study places, the student selection will be based on the student's aptitude, total number of credits completed and grades received.

The resources of the educational department and the courses offered by the University of Applied Sciences will be checked when admitting new students to degree programmes.

Application schedule

Application periods 2024

2 - 15 May (studies starting in autumn)
1 - 15 November (studies starting in spring)
Application form is submitted at Studyinfo during the application period.

 

The studies must be completed and registered by:

May application: by 31 July (studies starting in autumn)
November application: by 31 December (studies starting in spring)

The application can be submitted even if the required studies are not recorded in the study register during the application period (the admission is conditional).

 

Results published latest by:

30 June (studies starting in autumn)
15 December (studies starting in autumn)

 

Accepting the study place latest by:

31 July 3 pm Finnish local time (studies starting in autumn)
31 December 3 pm Finnish local time (studies starting in spring)

  • Current transcript of records
  • Personal study plan for studies that are completed after the application period by 31st July/31 st December
  • Identification document

Documents must be attached to the online application in Studyinfo.fi by the given date.

Education specific selection criteria

You can apply to become a degree student after completing the required number of credits (45 credits) at an open university of applied sciences in Finland.

The studies may include, for example, studies listed below in accordance with the curriculum of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, or studies of similar content completed in another Finnish higher education institution.
