Summer School Studies in Game Development 

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences offers summer studies in Game Development. You can choose to complete the course "Developing a Commercial Game Application" worth 10 credits. The language of the summer school is English.

Duration of Studies: 

Intensive course: 3 - 7 June 2019 (3 ECTS)
Summer School: 10 June - 26 July 2019 (10 ECTS)

Requirements: Previous knowledge of basic programming or graphics
Price: 10 ECTS = 150 euros
Registration: By 15.05.2019.
  The course is offered in the open university of applied sciences and can be accredited as part of your studies at your home university. Negotiate any possible studies to be accredited and the student financial aid for summer with your own university in advance.


Developing a Commercial Game Application (10 ECTS)

During the course, you will work in game development teams for two or three months while simultaneously learning the objectives and methods of developing a commercial game. The course requires also the ability to work independently without guidance. Within this course, you will create a game demo in production teams aimed at a wider audience and participate in the Assembly game development competition during the same year. You may have the opportunity to publish your own game.

Please note that if you wish to develop your skills in using either Unity 3D or Unreal Engine 4, you can also participate a week-long intensive course for this purpose: 

Game Programming Intensive Course (3 ECTS)

The objective of the intensive course is that the student masters the use of Unity or Unreal Engine and makes a computer game using either as a tool, as per instructions. The course takes Place on the first full week of June.  Price: 45 euros. 

Computer classrooms are available from Monday to Thursday until 9 pm.

Course content:  

  • Basics of programming and game development
  • Unity or Unreal Engine basics
  • Bringing own graphics to the game  
  • Developing own game

 Please note! Meals during the intensive course can be bought for a separate price of (the price for 2019 will be confirmed, incl. breakfast, lunch, snacks, evening snacks).

Accommodation in Kajaani

You can find accommodation for the summer on campus. Choose from the following options for furnished rooms: 

The Vocational College KAO offers rooms in a dormitory for the price EUR 120 / double room / month and EUR 190 for a single room / month (incl weekly cleaning in shared facilities). Further information (in Finnish only). The prices for the summer 2019 are yet to be confirmed.

Kajaanin Pietari offers shared student accommodation on campus for the price EUR 325 / single room / month. In the apartments on campus, there are 5 students sharing one apartment, each of them having their own room with fridge and sharing kitchen and bathrooms. Apply for the accommodation online


Exchange Students

Students coming for exchange from our partner universities are nominated by their home universities. The students should apply for the Summer School via their university's International Office. Application deadline is 30 April.

The price for the exchange students is 150 euros for the summer school and 45 euros for the intensive course. 

Please prepare the following documents to be attached to the online application: 

  • a photo
  • transcript of records from your home university (in English)
  • cover / motivation letter
  • the Learning Agreement

Further information

The summer course will be offered as open university of applied sciences studies. The participants from outside KAMK pay the fees as per invoice / online shop.
