Vimpelinvaara is a popular
outdoor leisure and sports area, which is conveniently situated right next to
the campus area. There are possibilities for jogging, field sports, tennis,
ice-hockey, skating, skiing and even downhill skiing and snowboarding. There is
also a disc golf park next to campus.
Other recreation areas include Pöllyvaara, a wooded area of tracks for joggers and walkers in the summer and skiing in the winter, the riverside parks and walks (for example the ‘Friendship Path’ from Kaukametsä) and generally all wooded areas in and around the town. You can go virtually anywhere you like apart from peoples’ front and back yards.
Take a boat trip in the summer to the island of Rehja in the middle of Lake Nuasjärvi, or ski across the ice in the early spring. Many people take the opportunity to strike out into the open countryside where they might grill sausages over a camp fire and drink a flask of hot coffee.
Cycling is safe in Kajaani and in Kainuu as a whole. There are cycleways within the town and even in the countryside. Cycling is a particularly favoured mode of transport both in the summer and winter. Most cycle tracks and pedestrian walkways are gritted and maintained during the winter. You can buy a second-hand bike from a shop in town. The distances are short and it's easy to find your way to different places by bike.
There are several different options in Kajaani for different kinds of sports (dance, zumba, judo, aikido, boxing, swimming, ice-hockey, soccer, floorball... to name a few). You can ask from the Student Union for the options and contacts as most of their web pages are unfortunately in Finnish.
There is a great movie theater in Kajaani, called BioRex. It was one of the first ones in Finland to show 3D-movies. In Finland we have all movies in their original language with subtitles in Finnish so it is easy to go an see foreign movies. To see a movie costs approximately 10 - 15 euros.
