Summer School Studies in Game Development

Due to the COVID 19-induced closing of KAMK as of 18.3.2020, we have cancelled all Summer Schools scheduled in 2020. Summer Schools will be organized again in 2021.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, KAMK, offers summer studies in Game Development. You can choose to complete the intensive course and the course "Developing a Commercial Game Application" worth either 10 or 15 ECTS credits. The language of the summer school is English.

The course is offered in the open university of applied sciences and can be accredited as part of your studies at home university. Agree on accreditation and student financial aid for summer studies with your home university in advance.


Game Programming Intensive Course ( 3 ECTS)

The objective of the intensive course is that the student learns the basic principles of using either Unity or Unreal Engine and makes a computer game using either as a tool, as per instructions.

Computer classrooms are available from Monday to Thursday until 9 pm.

Course content:  

  • Basics of programming and game development

  • Unity or Unreal Engine basics

  • Bringing custom graphics to the game  

  • Developing own game

 Please note! A meal package during the intensive course can be bought separately (incl. breakfast, lunch, snacks, evening snacks). The price for 2020 will be confirmed later.

Developing a Commercial Game Application (10 ECTS or 15 ECTS)

During the course, you will work in game development teams for two or three months while simultaneously learning the objectives and methods of developing a commercial game. The course requires also the ability to work independently without guidance. Within this course, you will create a game demo in production teams aimed at a wider audience and participate in a national or international game development competition during the same year or create and publish a game on an established digital marketplace for games.

Please note that if you wish to develop your skills in using either Unity 3D or Unreal Engine 4, you can also participate a week-long intensive course for this purpose.


Registration will be open from 16.3.2020 to 30.4.2020. KAMK will send instructions for course fee payment to the approved applicants at the beginning of May. Payment methods are invoice or online banking. The deadline for the payment is May 15.

The Vocational College KAO offers rooms in a dormitory for intensive week for the price:

Kajaanin Pietari offers shared student accommodation on campus for the price EUR 325 / single room / month. In the apartments on campus, there are 5 students sharing one apartment, each of them having their own room with fridge and sharing kitchen and bathrooms. Apply for the accommodation with the registration form. 

Exchange Students

Students coming for exchange from our partner universities have to be nominated by their home universities. Please contact your international office and apply by 30 April.
