Sustainable Mining and Circular Economy

The aim of the 2nd International Arctic Mines Summer School is to provide students with an overview on mining industry in Finland and give an introduction to sustainable mining principles and technologies as well as circular economy principles in the mining industry.

Programme is offered by the leading Finnish universities in mining and mineral processing, Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) and University of Oulu, and it includes field trips to several mines as well as a one week field trip in gold prospecting region in Saariselkä.

Course structure and teaching methods
Course tasks include pre-course tasks, expert lectures, workshops, laboratory work, several mine visits and field trips

Course assessment: pass – fail or in numbers from 1 to 5 (5 Excellent, 4 or 3 Good, 2 and 1 Satisfactory, 0 Fail)

Course assessment is based on active participation in sessions and group projects

Application

The application period for the summer school 2020 is now open. Please complete the online registration form no later than 31 March, 2020. KAMK will send instructions for course fee payment to the approved applicants at the beginning of April. Payment methods are invoice or online banking. The deadline for the payment is end of April.

The participants should have completed at least one year basic studies in mining and/or mineral processing related subjects before joining the summer school.

Travelling

Within Finland we recommend flying from Helsinki to Oulu. A bus transportation from Oulu to Kajaani will be provided on Sunday 26th of July, 2020 at 18.00. It takes approximately 2.5 hrs by bus to reach Kajaani. 

After the summer school, on 19th of August, the bus transportation is provided from the University of Oulu to the Oulu airport (both transportations are included in the participation fee). 


Participation fee, venues and accommodation

The participation fee for the summer school is 2200 € including a study fee, service package and taxes. The service package includes accommodation during the summer school (27 July – 19 August), student lunches for  each study day, as well as transportation and social programme mentioned in the programme.
