Six thinking hats (De Bono) is a method of Writing Aids. It can be used in producing theses, reports and essays, reflecting experience and innovating. Thinking hats can be used both in group and individual working. Different colours of hats or papers can be used to intensify thinking.

White: Data and information
  • What information do I have?
  • What information is missing?
  • What information would I like to have?
  • How am I going to get the information?

Red: Hunches, intuition, feelings and emotions

  • What kind of feelings does X arouse?
  • What kind of values are linked to the issue?

Black: Caution and judgement

  • What kind of negative aspects does X have?
  • What are the causes?
  • What do I need to pay attention to?

Yellow: Optimism, positive views and benefits

  • What are the advantages of X?
  • How can I achieve them?
  • What are the positive aspects of the issue?
  • How can I achieve them?

Green: creating ideas and alternatives

  • Are there any additional alternatives?
  • Is there any other alternative?
  • How could the issue be explaned?
  • Could I do this in a different way? How?

Blue: summary, overview and conclusion

  • How did I approach the issue?
  • How should it be approached?
  • What kind of picture did I get?
  • Could I have a summary of my view?
  • What is my conclusion?
